*Here the students use a 'timeline' to grasp a mental image of aspect. This artifact is supporting evidence for
ACTFL National Standard 3: Language Acquisition Theories and Instructional Practices, showing my ability to develop instructional materials that
reflect my knowledge of language acquisition. Using the information derived from my research on 'aspect' in the
Spanish language, I created a story using verbs in both preterit and imperfect. The students have to mark on the timeline
which verbs are in the preterit and which are in the imperfect, and show the duration. Imperfect verbs usually get shaded
into the timeline, showing the emphasis on the duration of the verb or description of the object. Whereas the preterit
verbs, are usually marked with a small mark or slash on the timeline, indicating it is viewed as a single event, or the emphasis
on is put on its beginning or end. I try not to give the students such concrete rules for the preterit and imperfect,
because I would rather have them gain an understanding of the aspect on their own. This timeline activity as used in
the days before we also wrote and presented stories about our childhood (Mi Niñez). I found that it helped the students
immensely in being able to tell their own life stories, and using the correct tense for each event they spoke about.
Actividad para el Imperfecto vs. el Pretérito:
El año pasado tuve una fiesta de disfraces para Halloween. Yo tenía catorce años
y fue mi primera fiesta de disfraces. Yo nunca celebraba Halloween con una fiesta, yo siempre
iba Trick or Treating. Me desperté a las seis y media, me levanté
y me vestí. Me levanté temprano porque tenía muchas ganas de celebrar Halloween y siempre me gustaban las fiestas. Comí el
desayuno y salí de la casa. Fui a una tienda para comprar mi disfraz. Me llevaba
el abrigo, los guantes, la bufanda y el paraguas porque ese día hacía mucho frío y llovía mucho.
Quería comprar el disfraz más bonito del mundo, pero no había nada en la tienda que
me gustaba. Ya eran las doce de la tarde, y tuve que regresar a mi casa para ayudar a mi madre. Cuando llegué a mi casa habían muchos carros en la calle. Entré
en mi casa y todos mis amigos gritaron: ¡Sorpresa! Era una fiesta sorpresa para mi,
porque mis amigos sabían cuanto me gustaba Halloween. Ese día bailábamos, jugábamos muchos juegos, y comíamos muchos dulces y pasteles. El
día era perfecto, menos UNA cosa...no tuve un disfraz!
